GSTIN vs PAN
GSTIN and PAN are India' two primary tax identifiers — one for direct tax (income tax), one for indirect tax (GST). Every GSTIN actually contains the PAN of the business embedded in it.
GSTIN
Goods and Services Tax Identification Number — required for businesses with taxable turnover above ₹20L (services) or ₹40L (goods). 15-character identifier issued state-wise.
PAN
Permanent Account Number — required by every individual, company or entity in India for income tax filing, investments, and financial transactions above ₹50,000.
🏆 Verdict
Both are needed for any GST-registered business — PAN is always required first, GSTIN is obtained using the PAN. For individuals below GST threshold: PAN is required, GSTIN is not. To check: your GSTIN characters 3–12 should match your PAN exactly.
